Joint Projects and Consultancies
TOP
Ctie works with outside organizations on research, development and other joint activities. A key focus is on ensuring relevancy of research to long term industry and market requirements.
Current joint projects and consultancies include...
ATcrc : The Australian Telecommunications Cooperative Research Centre
"ATcrc is focused on developing enhanced mobile service access solutions that deliver "anywhere, anytime, anything" connections with defined Quality of Service (QoS) to support multimedia applications. [...] The Centre's charter is to develop new technologies and transfer them to industry in a way that will enhance Australia's economy. Technology diffusion occurs through both commercialisation vehicles and an education program that delivers skilled postgraduates and specialised training to industry."

AANX : Australian Automotive Network Exchange
An e-commerce network development which will link vehicle manufacturers and tier suppliers within Australia and by late 2000 worldwide. Ctie was chosen in 1999 to provide network and technology advice, and as overseer of the nine month pilot implementation that commenced in February 2000.
A telecommunications link will be implemented between one of the service providers for this network and the Centre's network for testing purposes. Ctie is represented on the AANX Operations committee and working closely with the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries and The Victorian Automotive Chamber of Commerce on this project.

Digital Media Library
Development of the Digital Media Library enabling users to access the vast collection of culturally significant films maintained by Cinemedia, the former State Film Centre of Victoria, via the Internet. Research was conducted in a joint venture with subsequent development of a marketable product now known as SWIFT.
R & D for streaming and distributed multimedia, video encoding, video on demand, and network architecture were all provided by Ctie. Trials of this application were conducted at sites including the State Library of Victoria, Forest Hill Secondary College and Bendigo Secondary College.

Aerobotics
A project initiated at Monash University to explore autonomous airborne robotic applications. An award winning website of developments in this area is located at Eye in the Sky. Work in this areas has led to collaboration with Aerosonde Ltd. since 1999.
Aerosonde is a small to medium enterprise that has been actively engaged over the past seven years in developing autonomous aircraft. They are collecting meteorological data for the Bureau of Meteorology in the areas around Australia that cannot be covered adequately by other weather monitoring means.
Ctie and Aerosonde are collaborating in order to collect visual information for other applications such as coastal surveillance and environmental monitoring.
Ctie provide the video applications, wireless and image processing expertise and telecommunications testbed for this further development. There is also a strong collaboration with Monash University's Intelligent Robotics Research Centre relating to all control aspects of the aircraft.
The project was presented at the Airshow 2000 at Bairnsdale Victoria on May 7, 2000 with the extensive support of the local community and local media.
Further interest in the application of these aircraft has already been shown by farming communities and environmental organisations in Gippsland and the Western District and are intended to be explored for commercial viability to the communities.
