In May 1946 my father needed an airplane for some inventions he had in mind and so bought a Luscombe 8E Silvaire, a "trainer" model. He took flying lessons from Don Dwiggins, flight instructor at Whiteman Air Park in San Fernando and received his pilot license in record time.

Using the Luscombe he developed a kick-starter and installed it inside the cockpit. No more running from cockpit to propeller and back. No danger of propeller or engine kickback injuries from flipping the propeller to get the motor started.

This Kick-Starter was made on the side at home at 2048 Watson St., Glendale, CA. (Tel: Charleston 6-2478). Walter was a member of the Southern California Soaring Association. And made business trips to Dallas and El Paso, Texas from time to time, in his plane.
