'Baroness' Raymonde de Laroche

In 1909, while the Baroness Raymonde de la Roche was dining with Charles Voisin, he suggested that she learn to fly an airplane.

Taught by Voisin himself at Chalons, she received the first pilot's licence awarded to a woman on March 8, 1910.

In the same year as the only female participant in the AirMeet at Reims she was seriously injured in a crash. After a lengthy recovery, she went on to win the Femina Cup for a nonstop flight of four hours.

In 1919, the Baroness set a women's altitude record of 15,700 feet. In the summer of 1919, de la Roche, who was also a talented engineer, reported to the airfield at Le Crotoy to copilot a new aircraft in hopes of becoming the first female test pilot.

Unfortunately, the aircraft went into a dive on its landing approach and both the Baroness and the pilot were killed. A statue of de la Roche stands at Le Bourget airport in France.

La jeune actrice française Elise Deroche (1886 - 1919) a changé son nom en celui de baronne Raymonde de Laroche, qu'elle estime plus brillant pour le théatre. Avide de gloire, elle décide de voler et se prend au jeu.

Raymonde, remplaçant ses brillantes toilettes, ses chapeaux à aigrettes, les voilettes qui protègent son teint fragile par un gros chandail et un passe-montagne qui laisse son visage exposé aux morsures du vent, prend ses premières leçons de pilotage. Le 22 octobre 1909, elle réussit, au camp de Châlons, un vol de 300 mètres. Le lendemain, elle parcourt 6 kilomètres.

Désormais, elle délaisse le théâtre pour l'aviation et obtient le premier brevet de pilote féminin le 17 mars 1910. La même année, alors qu'elle participe à Reims au Prix des Dames, son avion s'écrase sur le terrain. On la relève avec de multiples fractures.

Elle reprend l'air dès la fin de sa convalescence et participe à de nombreux meetings. En 1918, elle bat les records féminins d'ALTITUDE (avec 4.800 mètres) et de distance (avec 323 kilomètres). Elle se tue au cours d'un vol d'essai, sur le terrain du Crotoy, le 18 juillet 1919
