Monash CTIE and the AFTRS have started planning for a project that will
link Melbourne and Sydney campuses in a real-world production.
The project is intended to develop online collaborative tools by conducting a shoot in Melbourne with the edit and post-production completed in Sydney under the direction of the Melbourne-based creative team.
The project will be a short drama with a special visual effects component that will use experience of Monash CTIE in broadband communications and the comprehensive post-production facilities of AFTRS Sydney.
During this demonstrator project, we will explore some of the issues raised by the industry during the consultative phase of Digital Docklands, the intention being to come up with some realistic solutions.
The industry representatives that have expressed interest in being involved in the trials will be invited to participate in the shoot and
post-production phase.
Overseas Connections
AFTRS Director Rod Bishop is in LA at the moment. He is visiting UCLA with the intention of finalising their involvement in the international phase of the CyberPort trials. He is also discussing the installation of components of the SWIFT system developed jointly by Cinemedia and Monash CTIE.
Digital Melbourne survey
You may have received a survey from the Digital Melbourne group. This is a welcome initiative, which we hope will make a start towards developing a broadband network strategy for the CyberPort precinct. The original Digital Docklands working group put a great deal of effort into raising awareness of the needs of the production community in the South Melbourne/Port Melbourne/St Kilda road area amongst Federal, State and local government agencies. It seems that this may be about to pay off. We trust that the Digital Melbourne group will adopt the inclusive model of the Digital Docklands group and recognise that the media production community has distinct identity and requirements. Dr Bruce Tonkin of Monash CTIE has been invited on to the Digital Melbourne group.
Age IT column
Watch out for a new column in the Age IT section written by Simon Britton of AFTRS and the CyberPort group. It will deal with many of the issues the group has encountered in the development of a set of tools and procedures for aspects of online media production.
