WWW and JPEG/GIF?

If you want to display still images on the World Wide Web, you have a choice of using JPEG or GIF; those two formats are by far the most widely supported by WWW browsers. (We can hope that PNG will soon become popular enough to replace GIF on the Web; see http://quest.jpl.nasa.gov/PNG/ for PNG info.) For most images it's pretty obvious which format to choose. [1]
